Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

AIMS: * To consolidate students' understanding of kinematics analysis by more advanced biomechanical analysis skills in 2D and 3D analysis of motion * Apply 3D analysis techniques to selected sporting and exercise activities

Syllabus:

SYLLABUS: [ Kinematic Conventions - Absolute spatial reference system, Total description of segments in 3D space. Advanced smoothing techniques: use of cubic and quintic splines and FFT. Advanced use of link segment equations and free body diagrams. Calculation of joint forces and moments of force. Interpretation of moment of force curves. ] Mechanical work, energy and power: Internal versus external work, Energy transfer between body segments, Energy exchanges within segments. Review of forward solution models. Effects of orthotics on gait. Examination of footwear and sports equipment design.

* Through critical examination construct a research question concerning appropriate three-dimensional analysis of a sports movement. * Examine the effects of advanced methods of data smoothing.

* Display a professional responsibility towards ethical research practice.

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

* Demonstrate the ability to set up cameras, calibrate volumes and obtain useful video data for two-dimensional analysis of discrete movements. * Demonstrate the ability to set up trial designs to define angle and segment orientation conventions.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Faculty contact per week: 2 x 1 hr lecture 1 x 2 hr lab (2A, 2B and 2C) The module is 50% practically oriented with theory and practice research informed to include international best practice in the field. This will aim to develop knowledgeable, proactive and responsible biomechanics practitioners. The module includes a six week research project for kinematics data collection and analysis.
